Scientists Hack Cellphone to Analyze Blood, Detect Disease, Help Developing Nations

A new MacGyver-esque cellphone hack could bring cheap, on-the-spot disease detection to even the most remote villages on the planet. Using only an LED, plastic light filter and some wires, scientists at UCLA have modded a cellphone into a portable blood tester capable of detecting HIV, malaria and other illnesses.

Blood tests today require either refrigerator-sized machines that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars or a trained technician who manually identifies and counts cells under a microscope. These systems are slow, expensive and require dedicated labs to function. And soon they could be a thing of the past.

UCLA researcher Dr. Aydogan Ozcan images thousands of blood cells instantly by placing them on an off-the-shelf camera sensor and lighting them with a filtered-light source (coherent light, for you science buffs). The filtered light exposes distinctive qualities of the cells, which are then interpreted by Ozcan’s custom software. By analyzing the cell types present in a much larger sample, a more accurate diagnosis can be made in a matter of minutes. No more sending blood away to a lab and waiting days or weeks for the results.

Hackers Acting Faster, Study Concludes

Zero-day malware accounted for 26 percent of blocked threats in November, says web security firm ScanSafe.

In its monthly Global Threat Report, ScanSafe said the rate of zero-day malware blocks increased in November to 26 percent of blocks, compared to 16 percent in October. The number is also significantly higher than the 19 percent average reported for the year.

In a zero day attack, hackers are faster than software vendors and security providers by exploiting vulnerabilities before vendors have time to fix them.

The most recent zero day attack was the Internet Explorer browser exploit. The vulnerability was found and then mistakenly released by Chinese researchers. The result was an explosion of attacks. Microsoft released an emergency patch on Tuesday, 17 December.

“Throughout November, attackers were more intent than ever on ensuring the malware they used would bypass traditional security measures,” said Mary Landesman, senior security researcher at ScanSafe.

“Given the dynamic and costly nature of today’s web threats, real-time scanning of web traffic before it reaches the enterprise is more essential than ever.”

Backdoor and data theft Trojans also factored prominently in November web malware exposures. In October, Trojans accounted for 13 percent of all Web malware blocks, but in November, it accounted for 30 percent. Five of the top ten web malware blocked in November were a result of this category of threats. The bulk of these Trojans include an autorun component that enables the malware to spread via infected USB and mapped drives.

“The recent increase in backdoors and data theft Trojans very concerning given the seriousness of this category of malware,” said Landesman. “Heightened exposure indicates attackers are going to new extremes to get their malware in front of users, perhaps as a result of the declining economic climate.”

One third, 33 percent, of all web malware blocks were through compromised websites. This is actually lower than the October peak of 65 percent. But this decline in exposure to compromised websites was offset by a boom in zero-day threats as well as an increase in social engineering techniques. The end result: despite the decrease in website compromises, the overall rate of web-based malware was only 2.4% less than the rate in October. October was, according to ScanSafe, the highest web malware month in history.

The ScanSafe Global Threat Report is based on analysis of more than 20 billion web requests the company processed each month for customers in over 80 countries.

Crying is Beneficial

We’ve all experienced a “good cry”-whether following a breakup or just after a really stressful day, shedding some tears can often make us feel better and help us put things in perspective. But why is crying beneficial? And is there such a thing as a “bad cry”? University of South Florida psychologists Jonathan Rottenberg and Lauren M. Bylsma, along with their colleague Ad J.J.M. Vingerhoets of Tilburg University describe some of their recent findings about the psychology of crying in the December issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The psychologists analyzed the detailed accounts of more than 3000 recent crying experiences (which occurred outside of the laboratory) and found that the benefits of crying depend entirely on the what, where and when of a particular crying episode. The researchers found that the majority of respondents reported improvements in their mood following a bout of crying. However, one third of the survey participants reported no improvement in mood and a tenth felt worse after crying. The survey also revealed that criers who received social support during their crying episode were the most likely to report improvements in mood.

Research to date has not always produced a clear picture of the benefits of crying , in part because the results often seem to depend on how crying is studied. The authors note several challenges in accurately studying crying behavior in a laboratory setting. Volunteers who cry in a laboratory setting often do not describe their experiences as being cathartic or making them feel better. Rather, crying in a laboratory setting often results in the study participants feeling worse; this may be due to the stressful conditions of the study itself, such as being videotaped or watched by research assistants. This may produce negative emotions (such as embarrassment), which neutralize the positive benefits usually associated with crying.

However, these laboratory studies have provided interesting findings about the physical effects of crying. Criers do show calming effects such as slower breathing, but they also experience a lot of unpleasant stress and arousal, including increased heart rate and sweating. What is interesting is that bodily calming usually lasts longer than the unpleasant arousal. The calming effects may occur later and overcome the stress reaction, which would account for why people tend to remember mostly the pleasant side of crying.

Research has shown that the effects of crying also depend on who is shedding the tears. For example, individuals with anxiety or mood disorders are least likely to experience the positive effects of crying. In addition, the researchers report that people who lack insight into their emotional lives (a condition known as alexithymia) actually feel worse after crying. The authors suggest that for these individuals, their lack of emotional insight may prevent the kind of cognitive change required for a sad experience to be transformed into something positive.

Here are the tips to speed up your computer…

1. Free up disk space
By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.Use Disk Cleanup to:

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files.

Remove optional Windows components that you don’t use.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

2. Speed up access to data
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.
Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer’s hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

3. Detect and repair disk errors
In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

4. Protect your computer against spyware
Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the Web sites you visit to usernames and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer’s performance. To combat spyware, you might want to consider using Microsoft Windows Defender, which is included in Windows Vista, and is available as a free download for Microsoft XP SP2. Alternatively, there are other free anti-spyware software programs available.

5.Learn all about ReadyBoost

Using audio and video on websites is increasing at a phenomenal rate, especially amongst internet marketers. While some people call it as “just a fad that will pass away soon”, I do not agree. While new innovations are presented all the time, audio and video are here to stay for a long time to come. Technological advances may reduce its usage but will never eliminate it. There are several obvious (and some non obvious) reasons why you should really use audio and video on your website. Some of them are: 1. Internet connections are now available at much higher speeds and cheaper rates, facilitating faster streaming and download for your visitors. 2. Computers are also cheaper and faster. So also is the RAM chip (memory card) which is an added advantage for streaming multimedia more smoothly. 3. Hosting accounts are now available with higher band width and are much cheaper than what was available only a couple of years ago. You can get a lot of bandwidth and disk space for under $5 per month. If you expect a lot of views and have a tight budget, you can even consider using free services from sites like youtube and hundreds of others (searching on google will give you plenty of options). 4. It is now very easy and cost effective to create a good quality audio / video file. Microphones, digicams and digital cameras are now available at better qualities, higher resolutions and are also much cheaper. 5. Audio and video allows you to give a better demonstration of your message that you want to convey to your website visitors, as long as they’re scripted well and recorded properly. You can give a live demonstration of a product with three dimensional views; show the working of software by recording the screen with the software in action, etc. 6. Another reason which I consider to be of utmost importance is – it will allow you to grab (and keep) the attention of your visitor for the period of time required to get your message across. With the growing scarcity of attention (the A.D.D. syndrome and the bombardment of ads being primarily responsible), this is a big reason to use audio /video in your websites. The average attention span of humans has fallen to 5 minutes and seven seconds, as opposed to almost 12 minutes, 10 years ago. It’s also more convenient to watch a video instead of reading content. On a marketing angle this is a plus point as more of the visitor’s senses are exposed to your message which works out to be more effective. 7. A lot of free softwares and some low cost ones make the job of producing audio and video much easier, as well as converting one audio /video file format into another. 8. Seeing the growing demand of multimedia, opportunists have taken full advantage and now there are plenty of audios and videos that can be purchased either with source codes and modified to your requirements, or are made generic and can be used directly without going through the hassles of recording. 9. Since it takes more effort to have multimedia on your website, not many will walk that extra mile. So it does make sense by taking that effort and being different from the others. If your competitors are not using multimedia, it is only a matter of time when they start doing this; so why not be the first in your market and take the undue advantage? Additionally, this effort also shows that you’re serious about your business and gives you more credibility. I hope you now realize that it does make sense to use audio and video in your websites to boost exposure, sales, uniqueness and overall effectiveness of your websites. GMail’s PDF Viewer

GMail has created a simple way to view PDF document attachments without having to download them. This is great news for those who are sick of their computers slowing down from having to open the Adobe PDF reader software and bad news for Adobe themselves. In order to view the document, GMail users just have to click “View” next to the attachment description. A new Google Docs window or tab will open the document.There is also a way to view the document in HTML. The link for HTML format is at the top of the new PDF viewer. PDFs can still be saved and viewed with Adobe’s software by clicking “Download.”

Features include zoom in, zoom out, next/previous pages. The only thing they need is page rotation and what we have here is a complete Adobe Reader replacement.
